Elderhostel group to build a new 16’ canoe and at end of program.

The completed canoe will be donated to a children’s camp

Elderhostel group classic cedar canvas canoe During this week long program participants will build a classic cedar canvas canoe using techniques and tools from the 1800’s.  The cedar ribs will be steam bent over a form.  Thin cedar planks will be hand clinch tacked to the ribs.  Once off the form the planking is finished.  Decks, thwarts, and hand carved carry yoke are installed.  The wooden shell is covered with tightly stretched cotton canvas ready for filler paint.

Finishing techniques will be applied & the completed canoe will be donated to a non-profit summer camp for children.  This program is held with support from Elderhostel and registration is limited. Contact Sagamore for details.

CEDAR STRIP CANOE CONSTRUCTION   - June 20-28, 2008

In this partners program each pair will construct a new cedar strip canoe. At the end of the week the completed canoe will be taken home where final touches of varnish and finish will be applied.  We begin the class with selection of strips and temporarily attach them to the form.  Once set they will be covered in fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin.  When set up the canoe will be taken off the form and the inside will get the same treatment.   This forms an extremely tough and light weight hull.  The decks and thwarts are installed and the canoe is trimmed out, ready to take home.  Previous wood working skills help but are not essential.  Only the desire to complete the boat and work with your partner is required.  We will have a busy week so a schedule must be kept and therefore on site customers only please.
• Course fee $1,973.00 per boat kit and instruction per pair
•Sagamore room & board $125/person x 8 nights = $1,000.00 per person x 2 per couple = $2,000.00
